Learn to sail in an outdoor classroom!

The beauty of learning to sail is that it doesn’t feel like learning! With the sun on your face, the breeze in your hair, and the soothing sound of the ocean, there is only one way to learn to sail and that is hands on deck in the most unique of settings.

We take the focus to a new dimension – the gorgeous Islands of Greece and Croatia is our classroom. Under our watchful gaze, you will navigate your way around dense pine forests on coastlines and picturesque harbours, stopping off to explore and relax along the way.

Beginner or Expert Roles

From absolute beginners who just want to learn the ropes to become competent onboard or if looking for more practical boat handling tuition to captain your own yacht with confidence, a sailing course with Getaway Sailing combines expert theory and practical tuition in Greek and Croatian waters.

And the best bit of all? You will be having such a good time that it won’t even feel like learning. After only six days and you will know the score. You will start to feel competent in your abilities, know what requires to be done and why. If you are a fast learner, you will even begin to learn the art of Skippering.

A Typical Class On Deck

Each day comprises a combination of theory and practical. We combine the basics, such as map-reading, navigating, casting lines off, anchoring, mooring, tying knots, points of sailing, preparing the sails, safe seamanship and then some of the more advanced sailing skills, but your learning won’t stop there. The crew are renowned storytellers, and you will be surprised at what else you can learn.

This is the life …

Every day in Greece or Croatia brings a new opportunity to learn new experiences and explore. We won’t let you lose sight of your sailing goal and our schedule for you is really a breeze.

After breakfast, your first exercise will be planning the day’s sailing. You will learn how to allow for fthe weather and you will also learn how to navigate the route, calculate distances, and estimate sailing time. You will be doing this every day so will pick up fast!
We normally set sail around 10am. It is your time to enjoy being ‘under way’ as you learn the practical art of feeling the wind. You will also learn at first-hand the ‘rules of the road’ as we give way to other vessels en route to our next destination.

Hungry Sailor

Every Sailing is hungry work, and you will be ready for a good meal by lunchtime! We always pick a bay to relax for a swim. Entering the bay we’ll need a couple of hands on deck preparing the anchor then drop! e at appropriate distances from the shore and other yachts.
Rest for a couple of hours before refreshing the practical skills you worked on in the morning, along with any theory and coaching. By the afternoon we will cruise into a traditional fishing village or port that we plotted a course to earlier in the day. This is real teamwork – making ready the yacht with fenders, mooring lines, and anchoring, before entering the harbour.

Anchored Evenings

Every Now we anchor for the evening. The Skipper and Crew are always delighted to introduce you to one of the traditional tavernas or konobas at port. With so many options to choose from you will be truly spoiled. Relax and enjoy the evening as you consider your achievements.

You are never too young or old

Sailing is a fun and safe hobby, and once you learn the ropes, you never forget. We have taught children from seven years old up to adults in their seventies. As long as you are reasonably fit and willing to learn, we will welcome you onboard.
